Georgie Fame and Olivia Newton-John in The New Fangled Wandering Minstrel Show (1973)

Georgie Fame and Olivia Newton John

The timeless nature of Georgie Fame's performing style was the perfect fit for The New Fangled Wandering Minstrel Show, a 1973 UK TV special that aimed to recapture the charm of a bygone era. Georgie starred alongside Olivia Newton-John in this musical review which originally aired on BBC1.

Written, produced and directed by Buddy Bregman, the show's "plot" concerned a troupe of minstrel performers travelling back in time to visit various historical sites, including the Vale of York, Castle Howard, and Fountains Abbey. With these beautiful settings as a backdrop, Georgie and Olivia performed If We Only Have Love, Yeh Yeh, Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow, All I Need Is You, and Scarborough Fair.

Georgie Fame singles: Bullets Laverne b/w St. James Infirmary (1968)

Georgie Fame: Bullets Laverne b/w St. James Infirmary (CBS 3495; 1968)

Released by CBS in both Germany and Holland, with the same release number, this 45 featured two tracks from the LP The Third Face of Fame. The German version had a picture sleeve.

Side A, Bullets Laverne, was written by Norman Greenbaum (famous for Spirit in the Sky) and B. Kane. Greenbaum's version was released earlier in 1968, under the artist name Dr. West's Medicine Show and Junk Band, on the Gregar label. The charming Tin Pan Alley tone that characterized Fame's rendition is already present on Greenbaum's original. Fame's recording takes it further, though, and with the help of arranger Harry South and his Big Band, turns the tune into a Broadway-style show stopper.

Side B, St. James Infirmary, is a jazz/blues classic, previously recorded by such luminaries as Louis Armstrong, Cab Calloway, and Billie Holiday. Starting out life as a folk song of unknown origin, it became St. James Infirmary in the late 1920s, with the lyrics being attributed to Joe Primrose. Fame's version, arranged by Derek Wadsworth, is haunting and heart-rending. Fame hits every note with a sincerity that is positively devastating.

Georgie Fame "Yeh Yeh" lyrics and chords

"Yeh Yeh" by Rodgers Grant/Jon Hendricks/Pat Patrick

as recorded by Georgie Fame & the Blue Flames

Every evening [Eb] when all my day's work is through
I call my [Cm] baby, and I ask her what shall we do.
I mention [Eb] movies, but she don't seem to dig that
and then she [Cm] asks me, why don't I come to her flat
and have some [Eb] supper, and let the evening pass by,
by playing records, the sounds of groovy hi fi
I say "Yeh yeh" That's what I say, I say "Yeh, yeh"

My baby [Eb] loves me, she gets me feelin' so fine,
And when she [Cm] loves me, she makes me know that she's mine.
And when she [Eb] kisses, I feel the fire get hot,
she never [Cm] misses, she gives it all that she's got
And when she [Eb] asks me if every thing is okay,
I got my answer the only thing I can say,
I say "Yeh yeh" That's what I say, I say "Yeh yeh"

BRIDGE

[Ab] We'll play a melody and
[Abm] turn the lights down low so that none can see.
[Eb] We gotta do that! We gotta do that! We gotta do that! We gotta do that!
[Ab] And there'll be no one else alive
[Abm] in all the world ‘cept you and me!
[F] Yeh yeh yeh yeh [Bb] yeh yeh yeh yeh!

And pretty [Eb] baby I never knew such a thrill
It's hard to [Cm] tell you, because I'm trembling still
But pretty [Eb] baby, I want you all for my own
I think I'm [Cm] ready to leave the others alone.
No need to [Eb] ask me if every thing is okay
I got my answer the only thing I can say,
I say "Yeh yeh" That's what I say, I say "Yeh yeh"
That’s what I say—yehyeh!

BRIDGE

Oh pretty [Eb] baby I never knew such a thrill
It's hard to [Cm] tell you, because I'm trembling still
But pretty [Eb] baby, I want you all for my own
I think I'm [Cm] ready to leave the others alone.
No need to [Eb] ask me if every thing is okay
I got my answer the only thing I can say,
I say "Yeh yeh" That's what I say, I say "Yeh yeh"
That's what I say, I say "Yeh yeh"
That's what I say, I say "Yeh yeh"
